Week 77 808 Tapas

Welcome back everyone! This is such a busy time of the year, so we are a little bit behind on our reviews, but our goal is to be caught up within the week. We hope that everyone is doing well and we thank you for your continued support with this blog.

What Teray Says...

So being it was Thanksgiving week-end that we went on this date, Brett and I really did not want to eat heavily being we had the day before at dinner. I suggested Brett go through Groupon and try to find one for something light and we lucked out and found 808 Tapas. 808 Tapas is by the same people that own my favorite sushi place in Vegas, 808 Sushi. It is located in the Village Square Plaza over by the movie theater. If you don't know where this is located, it is W. Sahara and Ft. Apache. There is also is a Patty's Closet and Sparkle there (you need to hit those up). 

808 Tapas was pretty busy when we arrived, but we got a table right away. We were greeted by one of our servers (they were doing community serving because it was so busy) who took our drink order. We both decided on water being we had been celebrating the previous two days with alcohol and needed a break. :)

We started off by ordering the shrimp cerviche and the fish tacos. Shrimp cerviche is always something I order no matter what tapas restaurant I go to. This one was a little different in the way the chips were (they were thinner) and the flavor of the cerviche was not what I was used to. I am not sure if this is because everything was chopped up so small or the flavoring they use, but it was by far the best I have ever had. Yes, I will through it out there, this cerviche is way better than my favorite place in Las Vegas' cerviche which also has tapas (you can figure it out).  The portion size was great too because there was plenty for both Brett and I. 

The fish tacos (you get two of them) were also amazing, again probably some of the best I have ever have. I can see why they are a favorite on the menu. The size of one is perfect for one person (it is full size), not a mini taco you would expect for tapas. 

The next things that we ordered were the dynamite (which I have made Brett a fan of from eating in NJ with my sister every time we went to sushi) and some sushi. There were many rolls to order and I cannot remember the name of the one we did. The dynamite again, was like the other tapas some of the best I have ever had. I knew I would love the sushi because I as I mentioned in the introduction, 808 Sushi is my favorite sushi place in Vegas, so it was a given for me. Also, the portions were fabulous to share on both of these menu items. 

After finishing those tapas we ordered a few more things. Brett picked the chicken skewers and the pork belly skewers. I picked the garlic edamame. I tasted both of the skewers. I am not the biggest skewer fan but they were pretty good. I let Brett eat most of those. I on the other hand devoured the garlic edamame. I am such a garlic fan and this just hit the spot. I could probably eat this every day for every meal, but then Brett would never come near me. Hahahaha.

The food at 808 Tapas is top notch, probably some of the best that I have had. The service was good, but I was getting a little confused who our waitress/waiter was and it took awhile to get the check, but I know that they were busy. If I were the I would get more seating, because this place is definitely going to be a huge success. Overall, I rate 808 Tapas 4 out of 5. 

What Brett Says....


So we have already been to “808 Sushi” so naturally we figured we should try out “808 Tapas.”  I was pretty excited because 808 sushi was pretty impressive, so the bar was set a little high already for their take on tapas.  They are located at Sahara and Ft. Apache in the same strip mall as the movie theater.  As of right now you should expect to become frustrated with the parking situation, don’t take it out on your restaurant experience.  The powers that be that run that particular shopping corner have decided to expand and improve it.  Unfortunately whoever they hired to do it all is a complete moron, they have made the parking lot worse then a random dirt lot next to the Super Bowl.  The lanes are all jacked up and there are random curbs. Plan on at least 15min just to park, for this reason alone I will not be returning to any business in that complex until it is completed.  That’s my rant about that stupidity but now lets get to 808.

I will start with the food.  Teray and I are both fans of tapas, so we know what we like.  808 throws in the Pacific Islander/sushi twist, I wouldn’t say they are a true tapa restaurant like Firefly.  They have some as well as larger meals and sushi.  We did a good mixture of cold food, hot food, and sushi.  Everything we had was pretty good.  The menu had a good flow to it and nothing stood out as not belonging.  I do think they are pushing the sushi a little too much, especially since they have a dedicated sushi restaurant.  I think that they should think about doing an all-you-can-eat deal like so many sushi places do.  They have enough on the menu that they could pick a couple from each category and make a special AYCE menu.  I think it would lend itself better to the sushi and tapas.  All that aside the food was good and I did enjoy everything.

As for the actual restaurant; I wasn’t impressed.  It was a long room with a bunch of table and then a sushi bar.  It looks like they were confused when building…is a tapas restaurant or is it a sushi restaurant.  The sushi bar is in the back and kind of hidden.  In the center of the layout is a large high top table that can be used for larger parties or several smaller parties.  I think this is a great idea, I just think they are too small to use it for their layout.  Aesthetically they restaurant is boring, the walls are just red.  So you have red walls, tables and a sushi bar you can’t even see.  Another thing that was annoying was the hostess stand.  It was halfway into the restaurant, so you walk in and have the dilemma of whether it is seat yourself or wait to be seated.  Since there was nothing to make the hostess stand obvious and there was no sign you just stand there and look stupid.  Which brings me to my next point; where do you stand while waiting for your table?  Do you stand by the hostess?  But then you are standing next to people as they eat.  They do have benches but they are in the complete opposite direction of the hostess stand.  Or you could just do what a bunch of people did, stand at the door with it open…forcing me to continually ask them to close it because I am sitting at the first table and it is kind of cold.  All in all the restaurant itself makes me think this would be a better take out place, like I said the food was good.

Now onto service.  I’m torn on this one.  Everyone we dealt with was very friendly and helpful.  Unfortunately we dealt with everyone.  I’m not sure if it was because they were shorthanded or if the management chooses to use a community server set up.  Either way it was as annoying as the parking.  The hostess was also the bartender and I guess even a server.  We didn’t have a set server, so we weren’t sure who to give our order to each time.  Also, we were constantly interrupted because someone new was checking on us.  There was no communication between the employees…how many times can we get asked if we are ready for the check.  They kind of do the same thing at 808 sushi but it is executed much better, at times it was just getting annoying.  Towards the end we just wanted to leave so it would stop.  I will say when we did order the food came out pretty quick and the fact that we got bugged every couple minutes by a different person made it easy to get water refills.  I just don’t think it works, I would much rather have had a single server.

Overall I would say the experience was a bust, a let down compared to 808 sushi.  I would recommend management go out to eat at Firefly and see how tapas service is done right.  The parking is horrible.  The restaurant is visibly unappealing.  The food was very good.  The service was annoying but very friendly and attentive.  I would either go here for takeout or find out when they are dead, definitely not a good place to go Friday/Saturday night.  I will most likely not return.

Week 64 Kona Grill

Hi Friends! As you can see our blog has a totally new look! We were lucky enough to be approached by and provided with a photo shoot to redo the look of our blog by Lisa of Love the Lens Photography. We just feel so lucky with this blog because not only are we getting amazing opportunities, but we just totally enjoy it!!   Anyone who knows Brett and I know that we don' t take ourselves seriously at all. We weren't about let's do a photo shoot to get discovered or be famous or any other nonsense, hahaha. Brett will tell you the same thing, that's just not us...we talked about this before we did the shoot too and went back and forth on the idea for a little bit. We are just regular people and like it being that way, just low key. So when Lisa approached us to do this we contemplated how to make it as much fun and carefree as possible,  mainly about enjoying the experience together.  I have to admit, I was kind of shy in Town Square while it was going on, because you know here in Vegas, everyone thinks they are a model, when really their agent is Facebook or Instagram (hahahaha...well, it's true!)  We really just wanted to personalized our blog and have fun photos together of us doing our favorite thing, being with each other. All of the looks in the pictures are from Patty's Closet, the Rainbow location. Also, what we love about Lisa is that the pictures look just like us. Not some version of us that if you saw the two of us blogging in a restaurant, you would have to look twice because the picture is not real life. What Teray Says...

This week-end on the blog, Brett's dad was in town so he joined us. His favorite place to go in Vegas is Kona Grill. Brett says that is because it is one of the places that he has brought him the most. I was excited, because I love Kona and we have never blogged about it, so it was a perfect match.

The weather was fabulous so we decided to sit on the patio. The temperature was perfect, the misters were going, the music was blasting, and people were just genuinely having fun, toasting to the fact that it was Friday. Our waitress greeted us right away and for happy hour we ordered some drinks and appetizers first. Brett and his dad had a Bud Light, I had a margaritta on the rocks. The appetizers we ordered were Kona calamari and avacado egg rolls. The egg rolls were a really good size for an appetizer, the portion was four of them. They also were fabulous because like most egg rolls I have had they weren't soggy and didn't taste too fried. (If you have read our previous blogs, you are familiar with the fact that I do not like when food tastes like it is super fried).  The calamari also was a good size portion with enough for three people to share. That also was delicious, because again it didn't taste fried to me although that's how it was cooked. 

For our meals, I ordered the pad thai noodles; Brett ordered the basil pesto linguine, and Brett's dad ordered the meatloaf. First, I will speak to what I ordered. I don't know why I picked a thai order at a place that doesn't specialize in thai food, but it was beyond delicious. It has to rank up there with some of the best pad thai that I have had here in Vegas. Also, the portion size is huge. I ate about half of it and still had so much to bring home for another meal the next day. I tasted Brett's pesto linguine and will probably order that next time if I don't order sushi (their sushi is great by the way) and Brett's dad's meatloaf was also pretty good in the taste that I've had (not as good as my mom's though). 

While eating our food I ordered another drink off of the skinny menu. The drink was only 34 calories and called the citrus flip. It consisted of sky vodka, monin sugar free triple sec and seaglass sauvignon blanc with fresh lemons and limes. For only being 34 calories, it was awesome!!! We had to order dessert as well so we went with the pineapple upside down cake. I love any dessert with pineapple, so this was top notch. 

Overall, the service, fun atmosphere, great vibe, outdoor seating, and of course the food and drinks definitely give Kona Grill a 5 out of 5 in my rating book!


This week our decision of where to go was made for us.  My Dad came out to Vegas for a little R&R, we let him pick the place, he chose "Kona Grill" in Boca Park.  An interesting decision since he isn't a sushi person, more of a meat and potatoes kind of guy.
In my opinion the way Kona is set up is how more places should be.  They have an indoor dining room, indoor bar, and a huge outdoor patio/bar.  The patio is on the parking lot side, which can be cool since there were quite a few $100k cars to look at.  They also have misters keeping things cool.  When we went it was happy hour, they have multiple, so our drinks and appetizers were pretty cheap.  Everything is comfortable, the crowd was friendly and it had a legit happy hour feel.  Even if you came here in a bad mood you would end up cheering up.  I think it is safe to assume this would also be a pretty good place to go if you are single and attempting to mingle.  It would equally be good for couples and parents, I would be more likely to sit in the dining room with children.  Both to avoid pissing off the fun crowd but also to refrain from getting upset at others for exposing a child to adult language...even though it is an adult environment.  It might even be 21+ for the patio.
Like I said it was happy hour so we got a couple appetizers; the calamari and the avocado spring rolls.  The calamari was a pretty good, could have been fried a little longer but it wasn't a big deal.  You actually get a fair amount.  As for the avocado spring rolls, kinda wish I had these in my freezer for at home use.  They were pretty amazing, nothing super creative...avocado inside a fried roll, nonetheless amazing.  For dinner I decided to get the pesto linguine, I haven't eaten pasta in a couple months so I was looking forward to it.  I was a little disappointed by the size, for the price of noodles they could have used more and filled the bowl.  It was a little spicy in a good surprising way.  The flavors all worked well together.  There was enough chicken to go with the amount of pasta, I would happily order this again but would need an appetizer as well.  My Dad ordered the meatloaf (I said he was a meat and potatoes guy) and he said it was good.  I tried a bite and concur.
The service was good, especially considering we were on a crowded patio during happy hour.  This is a place that staffs appropriately and realizes your customer service sucks when you are unrealistic with your servers.  He was on top of things; always made sure we had water, always getting refills on our other drinks and he kept us updated on our food.  He wasn't overbearing, simply put he did his job and he did it well.
I would plan on returning to Kona and plan to.  I think I could have a really good time with the right group of people.  Sitting on the patio was the way to go.  Food was pleasing and they hit all the right points on service.  This only thing to complain about was the serving size of my pasta, for that they lose 0.25pts.

Week 58 Chocolate and Spice Bakery

What Teray Says...

So this week we went of the suggestion of one of my friends Cecilia Clemmons to try Chocolate and Spice and I am so glad that we did. Chocolate and Spice is a bakery located in Summerlin, but it is much more than a bakery, it is the cutest place ever! (I will elaborate). When you walk into C & S it basically is like walking into bakery paradise. The decor is absolutely beautiful and the atmosphere is so relaxed and cheery that you immediately are in a good mood when you enter the door. I told Brett that I would love to have some sort of party here and I will still to the plan. 

There is a longer counter type table with higher chairs and mini tables with lush animal print chairs all over the bakery. It is basically like sitting in your cosy living room, chatting with your best friends and having a meal (my type of place). 

Well, I could go on about the decor forever, but I will continue with my review. :) There are many beverage choices and I went with an iced coffee (my favorite summer drink...heck my favorite drink all year round). Brett chose a frap, which I tasted and it was amazing, way better than the chain coffee places I am always visiting. We went at lunch time so I can speak for those options. There were many types of sandwiches, salads, macaroni dishes, and lunch meat pies. Although my mouth was watering for everything I went for a turkey sandwich with the fixings on fresh cranberry bread. Not only was this by far the best turkey sandwich I have ever had, the prices were phenomenal. Brett also ordered the same thing and we both finished the whole thing very quickly, which if you are a loyal reader, you know it is a rare occasion that I finish every bite of what I order. 

Let's get to the icing on the cake, the desserts. First take a look at these pictures and you will be able to see why I had a hard time deciding. 

Brett and I decided to order two things each. It's cheat day, so we can indulge. Hehe. Anyway, I chose a strawberry cake and a peanut butter and jelly bar. Brett chose a peanut butter and jelly bar and a Snicker's type thing. He will elaborate more I am sure. As for what we didn't choose there was everything from tons of flavored chocolates, to cupcakes, to pies, to more dessert bars. If you go there you will see the list goes on forever. My mouth is watering as I type this. They were the perfect size and again I feel like if I had a party soon, this is where I would be getting my desserts from for sure!

Overall, I absolutely loved Chocolate and Spice. I have found my new spot whenever I head over to Summerlin. Based on everything from the staff, the prices and the amazing food I would rate Chocolate and Spice absoultely perfect 5 out of 5! Check out their webpage: http://chocolatenspice.com/

What Brett Says...

Trying to get away from the standard restaurant once in a while is good.  Sometimes you don't want to have a waiter or wait for food to be cooked.  Sometimes you just need a relaxing environment where no one is bothering you.  It was that kind of week, so we decided to check out "Chocolate and Spice" on Sahara at Tenaya.  Chocolate and Spice is bakery meets coffeehouse meets deli.  Being the manly man I think I am I usually don't say what I'm about to say, but the place is cute.  I think everyone can like part of this place...hipster, upity, hippie, and maybe even redneck.


The place itself is pretty cool.  You order everything at the counter, the two women working were amazing.  Two of the nicest people I have encountered at a restaurant.  They both seemed to genuinely enjoy their jobs.  Service here is reason enough to return.  The counter you order at is one of the most tempting things I have ever seen.  They have sandwiches, pastas, baked goods, and candies.  As a former fat kid I really wish I had no concern for my waistline or my financial status.  I really wish I could tell you about everything they offer, I really do.  The rest of the restaurant has a pretty relaxing feel.  The have some counters, some tables, and a bunch of large comfortable chairs.  It kind of reminds me of a more extensive "Central Perk" from Friends.  The other upside is the smell, it is amazing and makes you crave more.


Lets get down to the good stuff...the food.  Teray and I both opted to get a turkey sandwich.  Only this turkey sandwich comes on a large cranberry ciabatta bun.  It was pretty large.  I'm not usually a fan of cold meat sandwiches but this is different.  The flavors are on point and the bread was amazing.  I also ordered a blended coffee drink, it took a little while to get but once I got it it was worth it.  The best part was that it was actually blended, I can't stand when my blended drinks have large chunks of ice that clog up the straw.  Once we were done with all that we decided to go back up for some dessert.  I ordered two little "homemade" candy bars; one was a peanut butter and jelly and the other was s'mores.  I was impressed and the only disappointment was that I limited my ordered to those two items.
I can only sum "Chocolate and Spice" with one word...AMAZING.

Week 48 Garfield's

What Teray Says...


This week Brett had a Groupon that we bought awhile back which include credit at Garfield's as well as two 25 minute massages at the spa next door. We headed into the lakes in Summerlin, which is gorgeous by the way and went right to the spa. The staff was extremely friendly and the massages were great. It was so quaint and peaceful to even be remotely near the lake.

After our massage we headed over to Garfield's for lunch. Garfield's reminds me so much of the beach restaurants back in Jersey. The decor is very summery, yet still a fancier place, and there is a patio  you can sit outside. We sat inside, but had a perfect view of the lake. Our waitress was very friendly and advised us of what we should order for lunch. I loved feeling the warm breeze as we waited for our food. You are given bread while you wait, which is always something that I love and hate at the same time. ;) I ordered a grilled chicken pesto sandwich with fries and I cannot for the life of me remember what Brett ordered. He will talk about it in his section. I normally am not the biggest fan of chicken because I eat it all the time, but it was delicious. I actually ate every single bite and all of the fries too. That is a sandwich I probably could eat a few times a week.

I really would like to go back there one day for dinner. I think it would be a great place for happy hour in the summer and very romantic. I rate Garfield's 4.5 out of 5 and I really enjoyed it. I think next time when I order more, they will get even a higher rating from me. 

What Brett Says...

So my life is hectic once again and it is causing a delay of the blog, I apologize.  This week's blog was inspired by an amazing Groupon deal; $55 for two 25 minute massages and lunch.  Not really sure how you could pass that one up.  Needless to say "Garfield's" was getting some outside support.  Being reviewed after an amazing massage is the way to go for a restaurant.  For any restaurant out there, I can be bought...just give me a massage and I will be happy to review you.  Seriously though...good reviews for massages.  Actually I am too much of a blunt ass to lie about something that isn't up to par.  So I guess you have to read to see how it was.

Garfield's is located on the water in Summerlin, there is a little strip mall on Regatta Drive.  This is a true transformation from strip mall to something else.  In Vegas you get so use to going to restaurants that are in strip malls, just a way of life.  Garfield's is amazing as far as transition and atmosphere.  You walk into an elegant dining room, the hostess leads you to the back where they have a two tiered patio which is set on the lake.  Sitting there eating I thought I was back at the restaurants in Michigan or Jersey.  I was just waiting for a boat to pull up and tie off.  There is just something special about eating on the water, getting to look out over the water, the soft breeze.  There is simply no better way to enjoy a meal on an amazing day.  Aside from the atmosphere we also had a pretty great server.  She was on top of things, offered some good conversation, and was honest about the menu.  Teray was going to order the Waldorf salad but the server informed her that there is way too much mayo...nothing like blunt honesty.  Only when a server tells you the flaws can you accept their suggestions.  

As for the meal, I went with the burger and fries.  Sitting on the water sometimes you just have to go simple and get American.  I can say they did a god job getting it right, the burger was filling and it tasted amazing.  The fries were right on as well.  This was the right way to cap off a strict clean eating week, on Saturdays I go crazy and eat what I want for three hours, this did me well.  Not a lot to say considering it was a burger and fries except it was good and I recommend it.  Everything we had there was good.
