Week 86 Sushi Koma

Wow, life has been busy and that is an understatement. Luckily, it has all been in a good way so I can't complain. We know we are a little behind on the blog so expect a new post every couple of days for the next few days. Remember you can always find our blog on the LV Informer http://lasvegas.informermg.com/. We are under the Local Interest section. We also have a Facebook page which we update frequently, so be sure to check that out if you haven't already http://www.facebook.com/thenewlywedsguidetovegasrestaurants .

What Teray Says...

Whenever Brett and I don't know where to go we always choose sushi for some reason. We both love Sushi and I feel like we have been to so many all you can eat places across the city, but we found this new gem not too far from our house. Sushi Koma is located at Flamingo and Durango. It is a small place and you probably wouldn't notice it driving by, but it worth the second look which you will come to find as I write my review.

We were seated and greeted right away when we arrived at Sushi Koma. There aren't many tables there but there were enough for people coming in without a reservation and there were still couples and families at tables and the sushi bar.

First of all, every single person that works at Sushi Koma is beyond friendly. It was not just the greeting type of friendly; they were very personalable and had great suggestions. The service was top notch. (I had to mention this first because it was so great, you know I normally don't mention it until the end).

We started off with the seared tuna carpaccio and the seafood toastado based on the recommendations of our waitresses. They were both so out of the box for a sushi place and delicious with a capital D. Some other rolls that we ordered were the SSS roll, the Bank roll, the Rainforest roll, miso soups, the Jane roll, nigiri octopus, red snapper, and yellowtail. Brett also ordered a suprise roll which was really great.

All of the sushi was fresh, the sauces were amazing, and the portion sizes were perfect. I became very full after not much sushi, but it was totally worth it. Sushi Koma had some of the best sushi I have ever had here in Vegas.

Overall, I loved Sushi Koma and will be returning. They are open until 3 am too for all of you night owls. Personally, I know I am in bed by that time and so is everyone else that we know, but if you are a night owl, this place is for you. I definitely give Sushi Koma a 5 out of 5 and will be returning for sure.

What Brett Says...

This week went with a Dragun family standard, sushi.  I personally wish I could live on sushi, if we wanted we could probably do this blog entirely with sushi restaurants.  Unfortunately we didn't think of that in the beginning, we decided to try different places and different types of food.  Teray made the decision and she chose "Sushi Coma" which is at Flamingo and Durango.

As you pull into the parking lot you slowly begin to realize that you are about to go to another strip mall sushi place.  They are pretty standard; very bland, handful of tables, a small sushi bar, and horrible staff.  When you walk in the door things change a bit, while it is small and only has seven tables that's where the standard ends.  It had a very comfortable and almost cool feel to it, there isn't much to be done with that small of a space.  The big thing they do that other small sushi places don't do is have personality.  Instead of older staff members that you can barely understand that act like they don't want you there they employ young females that speak awesome English and at least act like they enjoy their jobs.  They had so much personality and it just made it more fun.  They are open late and I could see myself having a good time late night getting some rolls and drinks, the staff would just make it an even better time.  They all helped us and made sure that we were taken care of.  We never felt neglected, service was a highlight here.

Talking about the food at sushi places can be a little difficult, even more so when we do all you can eat.  It is more or less a collective review of the food.  We had appetizers, rolls, nigiri, and dessert.  Everything we ate was amazing, it is safe to say that even with us experimenting nothing was disappointing.  The fish was fresh, the selection was amazing.  There were rolls that we had never heard of, we tried some of them and they turned out great.

Overall I would suggest you check "Sushi Koma" out, it is an experience.  I think I would like to try it out on a Friday/Saturday night around 1am.  I would recommend keeping your group to less then 4 people.  Service was amazing, food was amazing.

Patty's Closet Outfit of the Week
Thanks to Patty and Juan of Patty's Closet for providing me with my outfit of the week this week. Check out my outfit of the week provided by Patty's Closet Fashion Boutique. I love a cute dress, especially one that you can wear in the spring and summer seasons. Stripes are so classic and the color combination gives it a nautical flair. The sweetheart neckline also gives this dress the edge it needs to be taken to night time if you wanted to really dress it up. I just paired it with some flats from Heart&Sole by PC for a casual dinner. You can find this look at the Rainbow Patty's!

If you haven't already be sure to check out the Patty's Closet Facebook page which is linked above. They update it frequently with the newest items from their Tuesday and Friday shipments at all of the Patty's locations. If you aren't lucky enough to have a store near you be sure to check out their online store and website at shop.ilovepattyscloset.com

Until next time, cheers to spring! xo

Week 54 Goyemon Sushi House

We're back! Yes, we know we went to this place two weeks ago but right after we did, we left for Hawaii so we were not only vacation from the hustle and bustle of life but on vacation from the blog too. It was nice to come back to messages and emails to see if we were continuing the blog, and the answer is yes, we are back. :) Glad to have such faithful readers.

Remember you can always find our blog on the LV Informer, which is pretty awesome to be featured in a publication http://lasvegas.informermg.com/. Also, like our Facebook page for the latest updates: http://www.facebook.com/thenewlywedsguidetovegasrestaurants?bookmark_t=page

What Teray Says...

So the last restaurant we visited for our blog was called Goyemon Sushi House. Not only are Brett and I huge fans of sushi, but we love a place that has all you can eat sushi. You figure you can either pay around $25 for two fancy rolls or you can get all you can eat for a few dollars more and have choices of the whole menu, which is of course what we did.

Goyemon is located at Decatur and Hacienda. It is in a strip mall like most restaurants around here, but you would never know it when you are inside. I have to say, we did go at a popular time on Friday night and it was packed. We had to wait about 20 minutes for our seats (they don't take reservations) but it was a nice night and they have tables outside that you can wait at.

When we were seating the place was still hopping and we were greeted by our server right away. We read over the rules of all you can eat and found out that it lasted an hour, you could share and you could either order full orders or half orders. I have never been to an all you can eat sushi place that allowed you to order half orders which was great for me because you can get 4 pieces instead of 8.

I have to say Goyemon had the best sushi that I have ever eaten in Vegas. I am just going to list them items that we ordered and if you want to know what is in them, I will put the link to the menu: http://www.sushihousegoyemon.com/#menu_all_you_can_d

Between Brett and I we ordered the following things, all which were amazing by the way: athena roll, miso soup, seaweed salad, rainbow roll (my favorite), spider roll, shrimp tempura, lemon roll, alaskan roll, calamari, yellowtail, edamame, teriyaki chicken, green tea ice cream, strawberry and vanilla mochi, red bean ice cream, green tea creme brulee, and tempura ice cream.

Overall, I would absolutely rate Goyemon 5 out of 5 and think it is going to be my new go to sushi place. The service, food, and atmosphere were top notch!!!

What Brett Says...

If you know us then you know we are huge fans of sushi, before the blog we would go a couple times a month.  Which is why it is nice when we get to go for the blog, this was one of those weeks.  We decided to stay fairly close to home and go to "Sushi House Goyemon," on Decatur just north of Hacienda.  I had no idea this place even existed, which is weird because one of my posts is Hacienda/Decatur.  They are located at the end of a strip mall on the west side of the street.  I was starving going in so I was prepared to try plenty to give an accurate account of the overall selection.

We decided to do the all you can eat option, always a good idea when you go in super hungry.  For $26.95 (which is about the going rate for all you can eat) you get to spend an hour ordering anything and as much as you want off a special menu; Goyemon has a very extensive menu for you to choose from.  Most places have a much smaller menu.  They also allow you to order half rolls in case you want more variety.  The key to all you can eat sushi is to only order what you are going to eat, not eating something usually incurs a charge, not sure how much since I have yet to do that.  Even if it requires me to chuck sushi into the middle of Rainbow from the patio...but that it is a story for another time, when you are buying the drinks.  At Goyemon I ordered probably 10 items, it's tough to keep track of it all.  I think I ordered something off of each section of the menu, some rolls, some sides, some hot dishes.  I can say that everything was amazing, the fish was extremely fresh and still cold when it arrived at the table.  I do not recall being disappointed with any of the food I ordered, or the food Teray ordered and forced me to eat so we wouldn't get charged.  The only thing I was disappointed in, even though it is rare to see it, was some amount of alcohol included.  Usually when it is included it is cheap saki, but still, free alcohol is free alcohol.

Another thing that can make or break your all you can eat experience and that is the service.  Sometimes you get the server that is never around and impedes your ordering every 5 minutes, sometimes you get the server that lives at your table.  Which would you prefer when you are trying to stuff your face with a time limit?  Luckily we had a server that made sure we always had an order in, if she wasn't around someone else was there.  I think in the end we ordered from 4 different people; I could care less as long as we have sushi on the way.  We also always had beverages, which as you know by now is kind of a big deal to me.

Overall I would return, I would return faster if they had a saki option like other sushi restaurants.  The decor was welcoming, it was a very comfortable restaurant.  I would warn that there may be a wait but that is expected with good food.

Patty's Closet Outfit of the Week

Thanks to Patty and Juan of Patty's Closet for providing me with my awesome outfit this week, which is one of my favorites of all the outfits so far. I absolutely am obsessed with this outfit. It is totally different than what I wear on a typical day. The shirt is one that can be dressed up or down and I love that the pockets and trim are blue. A button down is a staple piece, especially because of the material. The palazzo pants are a sheer chiffon, but there is lining underneath. They are so comfortable and I love that they are high waisted. The bold color is eye-catching. I got so many compliments when we were out! My belt I added for a pop of color. This whole look is available at the Rainbow location!

If you haven't already you should definitely check out the Patty's Closet Facebook page for all the newest items and locations. They get shipments every Tuesday and Friday. http://www.facebook.com/PattysClosetLV Also, they now have an online store so you can get my looks wherever you live!!! shop.ilovepattyscloset.com

Until next time, cheers to summer time!!!

Week 8 Xtreme Sushi

Hi Everyone! Thanks to everyone for liking our Facebook page. We have over 80 followers and it hasn't even been a week yet! :) If you haven't already liked our page, please do so at: www.facebook.com/thenewlywedsguidetovegasrestaurants

What Teray Says:

This week was Brett's turn to choose where we were going. I didn't know until yesterday, but I was so excited to hear that we were having sushi. Those who know me know that sushi is in the top 3 when it comes to my favorite foods. I have heard about Xtreme Sushi from many of my favorite friends, so I was excited to try it.

Xtreme Sushi is located in Southern Highlands

Like I mentioned above, sushi is in my top 3 favorite foods, but I don't get to eat it much. Whenever I hit up a sushi place nowadays, it is very rare that I don't get the "all you can eat" because I like to try lots of different types of rolls. Brett and I knew going in that we were going to get the "all you can eat" special. I mean who wouldn't?! It is $26 for all you can eat rolls, salad, soup, apps, and one dessert. The only rules are that you can't share with people that aren't doing all you can eat (which I read wrong, I thought that you could not share at all, which is a bummer because I would have ate some of Brett's pieces of sushi if he traded for some of mine), you have an hour to do the special, and you have to finish what is on your plate. I have one complaint about this right off the bat; I have never been to an "all you can eat" sushi where the time limit is only an hour. Normally when we eat sushi, the time limit is 2 hours. I felt very rushed in the fact that I was ordering as much as I could order in between the rolls, because it took awhile to get them. I felt as soon as the waitress came up to the table I was talking a mile a minute about the different rolls I wanted. The hour limit is also not good for someone who cannot decide quickly what they like to eat <---this girl. Brett said something very true, that it wouldn't be the best idea on a date because you spend half the time looking at what to get, stuffing your face, and then ordering so that you can finish in the time limit. It doesn't leave much time to talk! LOL.

Okay now that I am off that soap box, time for the food. We both started out with our usual, miso soup. While waiting for the soup, I looked around at the decor. I thought that coolest thing was the tables. See these rock like things, that is what is under the glass of the tables. I was amazed by this and it was much of my conversation to Brett for the beginning of the meal. I really liked it for some reason. LOL. The place is pretty small, maybe about 10 tables, but I enjoy a smaller environment when it comes to a restaurant because otherwise I get overwhelmed.

Brett and I ordered the following rolls (I cannot remember what was in each- and if I wrote it down I would have not been able to talk at the meal at all): money roll, helmet crest roll, nanning roll, double s roll (which I remember was spicy), funny name roll, southern highlands roll, protein roll, blue diamond roll, linkin roll, sea urchin, tako (octopus). We got half orders of each of these which are 4 pieces. You can also get them in 8 pieces.

My sushi rolls consisted of fresh fish and veggies. I do not care for rolls that have crazy sauces or weird things like that. I do like spicy rolls though. The fish I have to say was in the running of some of the freshest that I have ever had with sushi. Poor Brett, he ordered the sea urchin (in the third picture wrapped in seaweed and that orange almost paste like substance in the middle). He decided to choose it because he never had it before. Brett is normally known to eat anything and not complain. He was so grossed out and disgusted by the taste of this. I was cracking up watching his face because it just seemed so painful for him to get it down. I started pulling rice out of my sushi and putting it on his as well as covering it with soy and ginger to disguise the taste. I was going to order that; that god I didn't because I probably would have "dropped" it on the floor by accident so that I wasn't charged extra. LOL.

I had read online that for dessert we had to try the fried ice-cream. All of these people were right. This was so amazing, not too big, not too small and just the perfect amount of sweet. Too bad you could only order one dessert. ;)

Overall, I really enjoyed this place, probably because like I said, sushi is one of my favorite foods. I would definitely go back again, and there are coupons in the Entertainment book, which is pretty cool. I rate Xtreme Sushi 4.5 out of 5 not due to the food, but due to the one hour limit on the all you can eat.

What Brett Says:

Xtreme Sushi" which is pretty much next door to our week 1 pick (Off the Strip).  Once again our restaurant is in a strip mall, which is now pretty much a standard for Las Vegas restaurants.

I'll start with the food...I think Teray is going to list all the rolls we had, so refer to her's above if you want to know names.  We decided to do the all you can eat option, something we have done before at random other sushi joints.  At "Xtreme Sushi" it is $26 for one hour of gluttony.  This right here was kind of disappointing to me, while the price was on par with most all you can eat sushi the time limit was cut in half of every other place I have been.  The only reason this is a problem is because you almost spend your entire date trying to decide what to order next so you don't run out of time.  I would say you eat the same amount in 1 hour as you do in 2...clearly this isn't true for everyone (Joey Chestnut).  When you have 2 hours you can take your time, eat at a normal pace, and include conversation.  The rolls themselves came out at a good pace, the first roll did seem like it was taking forever but I think that was just anticipation.  As for the taste, every roll I had was one that I had never had and they were amazing.  As a side note I also had Uni (sea urchin) for the first time, yuck, this had to be the absolute worst looking and worst tasting thing I have ever had.  Anyone that knows me knows that I can put food away and will eat just about anything.  Sea urchin will never, and I mean never enter my mouth again.  I would rather have a 5 course Fear Factor meal then another piece of uni.  But like I said, everything else was amazing...the fish had good color, tasted fresh, and they didn't load it with rice.  We also ended the date with Japanese fried ice cream...you are only allowed one dessert with the all you can eat, which is weird to me since the cost of ice cream is way lower than sushi grade fish.

Now onto the physical restaurant.  The place is small, 10 tables and a sushi bar that prob seats 12-16 people.  The decor is simple, the tables and chairs were very modern without being that "trendy weird."  I always talk about opening a restaurant and this place would be the perfect size for what I want...lively, intimate, but still big enough to have a party.  There really wasn't much Asian influence in the restaurant, in fact a day later I can't think of anything beyond the Asian staff members.  The only cheesy thing I would say is that they had a coupon thing and a steak special taped to the top off the table.  But all in all, one of my favorite physical places we have been to.

In conclusion (yes this is how I ended my college essays), I would go to "Xtreme Sushi" again, but not on a one on one date.  I think this needs to be a double or triple date place, that way everyone can get all you can eat and do it family style.  That way there is always food coming and there is more time for conversation.  There are better places for a date, if you do want to try this as a date place just order by the roll and take your time.  Apparently there is a coupon in the Entertainment Book.  As for the food itself I would order it to go or eat in, I think it might be the best tasting sushi I have had.
Rating:
Taste of the food: 5/5
Physical restaurant: 4.5/5
Staff: 4/5
All you can eat value: 3/5
Sea Urchin (Uni): 0/5

Overall: 4.25/5

Patty's Closet Outfit of the Week

I loved my Patty's Closet outfit this week. Of course, thank you to Patty and Juan of Patty's Closet for providing me with this outfit. As most of you know, I am normally a dress and skirt girl, that is what I live and breathe in. These lace shorts though are so different in the fact that they are lacy, comfortable and can be dressed up or down that I could not resist them. My top too can be dressed up or down. It is a sheer material and a flared, fit. The straps are tie adjustable, so you can adjust them to the way that is most comfortable to you. This could be worn for a date night like I have it, with jeans and heals for cocktails, or even for work if you put a shirt underneath and a cardigan over it being that it is sheer.
